I created the Rivian R1C as a creative exercise to be able to showcase three main talents. Design, Modeling, and Rendering. This is an ongoing project and I intend to use it as the basis for my online course content and freelance capabilities, where I can feature a variety of design related studies on a vehicle that I created. It all starts with a sketch….
The inital idea for this aero inspired vehicle came from taking what Rivian already had as amazing designs, the R1S and the R1T, and thinking of a crossover coupe segment similar to the BMW X6. An aero optimized cabin with plenty of storage but for the more highway traveler with occasional offroad usage. The process, at this stage, is messy…but doodles quickly turn into refined sketches over package drawings, and after that we move on to the 3D model.
The next step was to create some quick iterations in Vizcom.AI. This tool allows me to ‘preview’ what the final sketches will look like once the model is made and the renders are created. It’s also a good chance to make some design decisions and refine a bit before proceeding.
Modeling went quickly as I used an R1T model from CGTrader.com and quickly sized up the proportions. Slightly longer wheelbase than the R1S, just a bit shorter than the R1T. Lots of small refinements to reach a suitable design agreement based on the sketches and the package.
The model was prepared in Unreal Engine to take advantage of the game engine performance with interactive scenes. Above are some workflow videos of the process. This model was the first iteration of the design, and I’ve since created variations of that design based on feedback and personal refinement. More to come soon!
